On March 14, 2567, the International Institute for Trade and Development (ITD), in collaboration with UNCTAD and the Thai National Shippers’ Council, organized a seminar on “Just and Equitable Transition to a Decarbonized Shipping Industry in Southeast Asia” at The Berkeley Hotel Pratunam, Bangkok.
The seminar was opened by Mr. Wimon Punkong, Deputy Executive Director (Academic) of the International Institute for Trade and Development, and honored by Dr. Chaichan Chareonsuk, Chairman of the Thai National Shippers’ Council, Dr. Supree Srisamran, Senior Analyst at Krungthai COMPASS, and Dr. Sathit Niamsuwan, Project Manager (Low Emission Support Scheme: LESS) at the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization, who served as speakers, exchanging perspectives, ideas, and opinions on the pathway to achieving a fair and equal decarbonized approach in Thailand’s maritime transportation sector.
Maritime transportation plays a vital role in driving and enhancing Thailand’s international trade by delivering raw materials to production centers distributed globally, thereby facilitating rapid economic growth and international trade. However, the growth of maritime transportation has implications for the balance of greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. Hence, it is essential to strike a balance between environmental goals and economic needs to achieve complete decarburization.
